About GBAx

A new home for your Game Boy Advance games.

Translucent violet handheld console illustration

GBAx brings a fresh approach to classic handheld gaming: a modern launcher, an artwork-rich library and quick access to your favourite games.

Built on the mGBA emulation foundation, GBAx brings desktop play, a games catalogue and practical guides together in one place.

Built on open source

GBAx uses the mGBA emulation foundation. The current browser player integrates EmulatorJS with mGBA. GBAxJS is a planned dedicated browser-player project.

The project

One home for playing and learning.

Download the desktop app, organise your collection, explore the game catalogue or learn how the emulation core works. The documentation includes practical setup help and source-build instructions.

What comes next: GBAxJS

GBAxJS is the planned dedicated browser-player project. The current website player uses EmulatorJS with mGBA; the desktop launcher and browser player currently manage saves separately.

The desktop experience

A library with a clear path into play.

GBAx’s launcher scans your chosen folders, presents cover artwork and keeps favourites and recent games close at hand. Artwork retrieval and library discovery run separately, so a missing cover does not have to stand between you and a local game.

When you launch a game, the desktop frontend takes over presentation, audio and input while the mGBA-derived core models the console. Keeping those responsibilities distinct makes both the interface and the emulation easier to understand.

The emulation foundation

Explain the machinery behind the game.

A running game depends on more than its processor. Memory access, scanlines, sound channels, timers and cartridge save protocols must agree on what happens and when. Our hardware documentation follows those interactions through the released source, with examples you can trace.

GBAx builds on mGBA’s emulation work. The articles distinguish that core implementation from the launcher and from browser playback, and identify the source revision they describe.
